I'd like to be...under the sea...in an octopus's garden in the shade-

So, it's 5:30 A.M. and I'm sneaking around my kitchen like a Navy Seal. My mission: have a cup of coffee and a moment to myself before the troops wake up. I'm praising the coffeemaker gods for the "pause 'n serve" function, as I can not possibly wait the full 6 minutes of brew time. Coffee--- friend, lover, confidant. Mmmmm.

Aannyyway...Last night I had a date with my son. We went to McD's and then to the library for Make it Mondays. The description said they would be reading stories and singing songs about fish, crabs, and other sea creatures, and making a pretend aquarium. What the description did not say, however, is that there were going to be at least 70 kids!! I think that Little Man was well-behaved, all things considered. I'm assuming that most of those other kids are in preschool or daycare settings where they are expected to sit for a story, or they were overwhelmed by the number of kids. Not my kid. Shy? What's that? We sat at the edge of the circle, and I whispered to Brodie that he could move a little closer if he wanted, and I showed him an opening. He scooched up. Then he looked back at me, grinned, and proceeded to scooch an elaborate maze of children until he was front and center (and of course where I couldn't get to him). Everytime the story lady turned the book away to show a picture he stood up and walked right up to the book. I ran around the outside, snuck in and removed him to discuss "personal space" and sitting quietly. Yeah. Not interested, Mom. Then he spies the books that she has on display, along with shells, puppets, and assorted sea treasures. Now, here is where I cannot fault my son. If you are going to put these items on display (and not even use 1/4 of them) and don't want anyone to touch them, do you put them on the floor where the kids will be sitting? If you have to think about that for more than a second, let me tell you that the answer is "no." At least he wasn't the only kid doing that (he was the only kid who also was interested in the other books). Then he was pestering kids, wanting to visit. Okay, now for a song and dance. Finally. We all stand up, and she plays Octopus's Garden. Brodie went nuts. I'm 100% sure he was the ONLY kid there that knew every word to that song. He was skipping, galloping, singing, octopus-ing...totally oblivious to anyone else in the room. I may have to rethink testing him for early admission to kindergarten. If one portion of the test is sitting in a group and listening, we're sunk. Hopefully, preschool in the fall will fix that. The actual craft portion went okay except that there were SO many kids. He (I) made a little diorama out of an old clear VHS tape box. Next month they're going to make pet rocks. We may be passing on that one.
