We actually got to spend some time outside yesterday. I prepped my garden a bit. It still needs some topsoil and fertilizer. I hope to get tomatoes and herbs planted by Memorial Day. I noticed my neighbor planted his yesterday. I don't know what else to plant; maybe zucchini and cucumbers? My oregano came back and is looking 3 times better than it ever looked last summer.
Let me tell you, my son did the naughtiest thing that I think he's ever done. He was riding his Big Wheel in the driveway. I was standing right in front of the garage. About halfway down the driveway, I always put a yellow "Caution Children at Play" sign. He knows he can't go past it, and if anyone pulls in the drive they'll have to stop. Now, before I get into what he did, let me preface the story with the facts that I have taught him that the street is dangerous, hold a grown-up's hand, we only walk on the sidewalk, etc. (you see where this is heading I'm sure). So, he reaches the yellow sign and starts to cross the boundary. I called to him to turn around and come back. He got off the Big Wheel to turn it around, looked back at me and decided to run down the driveway at full tilt. If you know me at ALL, I do not run. I came in last for every race, always tripped and fell on my shoelaces, blah-blah-blah. Well I RAN. I told Tom I felt like Christopher Reeves running next to the train in Superman, although I know damn well any onlookers were thinking, "Ha, look at the chubby mom doing the "mom run." I can not believe how fast a 3 year old can be on those little legs. Just as he crossed the sidewalk and hit the apron of the driveway, I grabbed him by the neck of his shirt. I grabbed it so hard, he has friction burns that look like hickeys on his neck. I have never yelled at someone so loud in my whole life. What the hell would possess him to do that? He spent the rest of the "outdoor time" in the yard with all gates locked. We had a long talk about what can happen if you run into the street. I asked him where he was going. He said he was going to work. I guess the thing that pisses me off, is that my neighbor was standing about ten feet away from him when he took off. I didn't expect her to chase him, but I would have at least called his name to distract him.
Well, today Tom went into work for a few hours of overtime, and after lunch I think we're going to make a journey to Lake Geneva. I think we're going to have pork chops and veggies on the grill tonight. Yum. Last night was steak and salad. Tom thinks he could do the South Beach diet if he can eat steak and salad every night!
